Endless
the sun rises on endless waves 5 in a row tan 30 minutes and flip currents push with ease the lapping tide draws in and out to melodic laughter then darkness envelopes the sun causing goosebumps and rough waters a menacing storm encircles with drowning gasps and shoving currents while linked arms push against as the contracting tide releases a breathless arrival on shore and the sun rises on endless waves |
In my poem, “Endless”, I convey the importance of friendship as a necessary source of emotional stability and support. Throughout the poem, I metaphorically integrate the setting of the beach paralleling the literal events taking place on the beach with the characters’ emotional shifts to figuratively convey the continuum of an emotionally supportive friendship throughout all of the dynamics of life. Overall, the message of my poem is that friendship is essential for the enjoyment of life, because it provides happiness, security, and constant support.
In the first stanza, the background is set with a picturesque day where a group of friends are tanning on the beach. This provides the audience with the temporary illusion of happiness and the ideal concept of friendship. I purposefully include how the “currents push with ease/ and the lapping tide draws in and out” (4-5). The force of currents symbolizes the encouragement of friendship creating motivation to continue living functionally, which is executed with ease during periods of bliss and contentment. I integrate a shift in weather when I say that the “darkness envelopes the sun” (7). This signifies a change in mood from happiness to sorrow and misery, shifting the theme’s focus to the application of friendship under unfavorable occurrences. Once again, I accentuate repetition in the fourth stanza with “shoving currents” (11) where the backing up of friendship continues, but requires more force due to the emotional strain of hardship imposed by outside forces impacting the characters, embodied by the storm and characters drowning. The “contracting tide releases” (13) paralleling the mutual rescue of drowning friends, which resembles their help as a stable basis of support to help each other get through rough times. Lastly, the first line is repeated at the very end where “the sun rises on endless waves” (15). The repetition and emphasis of the word “endless” creates a theme of continuity throughout the poem symbolizing the constant presence of supportive friends throughout the inevitable events of an emotionally dynamic life from enjoyment to anguish. Despite any situation, the sun always rises and the waves remain, similar to that of a friend’s love and support as seen through their linkage through positive and negative events. Overall, my poem “Endless” communicates the perseverance of a symbiotic bond between friends allowing the overcoming of life obstacles. I conveyed this perseverance through the strategic use of setting where the beach’s qualities mimic the literal characters’ physical struggles against rough water, and their metaphorical emotional struggles. In the end, the poem’s message is that the supportive presence of a positive friendship makes the downsides of life easier to handle. Friendship is a very important factor to the human community as an entirety, because the constant flow of motivation, stability, and happiness makes for an increased quality of life with manageable obstacles. Friends are always there to celebrate the good and for comfort during bad times. This decreases amounts of loneliness, depression, and anxiety through the solace and security of a mutual bond. The infectious happiness brought about by friendships therefore increases the overall quality of life and allows for the mutual growth of people. |
